Breathing with the Mind

Throughout the Practice of Living Awareness, the practitioner is asked notice the experience of the moment and go deeper into its sensations, as well as the comings and goings of the breath and thoughts. As a result, awareness arises, both on and off the meditation cushion.

Step 9 asks the practitioner to notice the current state of the mind and its qualities. Is the mind contracted at the moment: focused, contracted, detail oriented? Is the mind expanded: open, curious, wide? Or is the mind empty: void of all projections and labels, resting in potentiality? We’ll work with all three of these states of mind this week. For today, simply breathing and noticing the asset, gift, and tool that is our mind.
