Consider a Smile



Step #1, Smile – Day 2  There is a common misconception that meditation is about checking-out; that it is about going somewhere else. Ah, the floating meditator off in space. It’s not such an accurate image. A key aspect of meditation is checking-in; establishing presence.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, one of the many pioneers of meditation in Western culture, defines mindfulness (which is an aspect of meditation) as “the awareness that arises when we pay attention, on purpose, moment to moment, without judgement.” It is a lovely definition and one that we will explore throughout this practice. For today, we focus on the last two words: without judgement. As we learn to allow, to experience without judgement, we are offered greater access to that which life offers; we can connect more fully and directly to it. We can check-in to our experiences. A smile assists us with this. It moves us toward acceptance and from that place, the adventure begins. So as your next moment unfolds, consider meeting it with a smile.
