A dear friend of mine starts almost every conversation the same way: “What’s on your gratitude list today?”
And honestly—when I go with it, it is exponentially rewarding. The moment I find the first thing I’m grateful for, something shifts. It’s like momentum kicks in. One small appreciation leads to another, and pretty soon it feels easy—almost playful. Like a little game of noticing what’s already good.
Right now, for example, I’m grateful for my pale blue mug and the mint tea inside it. I’m grateful for the warmth it is providing my hands on this grey wintery day. And I’m grateful that I paused long enough to notice these things.
And then, naturally, the bigger gratitudes arrive. I’m grateful for my health. For running water. For friendships. For the patience of my husband. For the caring nature of my brother. For the humor and steadiness of my best friend. I’m grateful to feel safe in this moment.
When you spend a minute with gratitude, it changes the tone of your heart. It returns you to presence. It reminds you that your life is larger than whatever is limiting you. The human spirit is big enough to hold deep gratitude—when we make room for it.
Happy meditating.
