This week we’ve considered some very auspicious word pairings: “Heart + Mind” and “Living + Awareness.” Today, we’ll add another: “Loving + Kindness”.
Loving Kindness meditation is traditionally a Buddhist practice referred to as “metta bhavana”. Metta translates to “loving-kindness” or “friendliness” in Pali, a language closely related to Sanskrit. “Bhavana” means “cultivation” or “development”. And so, metta bhavana is the practice of cultivating a sense of friendly connection to ourselves and others. What is meditation if it is not directly, or indirectly, cultivating a friendly attitude towards ourselves and others?
Let’s pair up some more auspicious words that fold in nicely to the theme this week:
universal happiness
compassionate care
peaceful ease
calm consideration
lighted understanding
well being
…happy meditating.
