Goodwill is a reflection of the human spirit. You are made of this.
Goodwill is usually thought of as the intention to care for others—to be kind, helpful, supportive, and contribute something positive to the world. And of course it is that. But there’s a deeper dimension to goodwill. It moves in subtler ways, beneath the surface of things, through the tone we carry, the space we create, and the way we meet the moment.
For many years we ended the Living Awareness meditations by saying, “Change yourself, change the world.” This wasn’t moral encouragement as much as a reflection of how experience actually unfolds. What we hold inwardly doesn’t just stay tucked away inside us. It moves. It participates. It affects the field around us and becomes part of what others experience too. Goodwill, then, isn’t only something we offer outwardly. It circulates inside and out. It moves through the body and through relationships. It moves through every interior and exterior environment. It moves through conversations, interactions, and through the whole of experience. Mine. Yours. And the world’s.
Acts of goodwill begin with alignment. A steady mind and an open heart create space for ease, inclusion, and care. The “will” in goodwill can make it sound imposed. It’s not. With practice, it can feel more like remembering something that was already there. As the boundary between inner and outer softens, the distinction between self and other softens too. Judgment gives way to compassion. Rigidity gives way to movement. And slowly, naturally, fixity becomes flow… toroidal flow.
