The Torus and Toroidal Flow

Flow, in the shape of a torus, is happening all around you—microcosmically and macrocosmically. It is the ever-present cyclical movement of energy that produces and sustains the atom, the Earth, a chakra, a solar system, and so much more. One definition describes the torus as a self-organizing system that comes together at a single point of unity and expands its energy outward in every direction, all around itself, until it returns back to that space in the center—and continues to do so.

As the cycle of a day begins, we are immersed in its flow. A particular meditation begins, and we are immersed in a different kind of flow. With awareness, we are able to notice flows of all sorts. Breath is flow. Life is flow.

The movement of this energetic phenomenon is called toroidal flow, and it is the theme of this week’s meditations. Here is one way it serves us: as the periphery of awareness expands, it gathers more. It includes more. These details are gathered into experience, and that experience becomes part of who we are.

You might say that the moment-to-moment flow of gathering experience and responding to experience shapes a life. Evolution is flow.

Perhaps the shape of a life is toroidal.

Let’s meditate!
