Something About Seven

As we begin Week 7, we tip our hats to the number that has wandered into nearly every corner of human experience! It’s creation’s way of saying, “Here is life—arranged for you—beautifully and meaningfully.”

There are 7 days of the week, 7 colors in the rainbow, 7 notes in the musical scale, 7 classical metals, 7 continents, 7 stars in the Big Dipper, 7 directions of space if you include the center. Again and again, seven appears where life is being organized into a meaningful pattern. It suggests structure, rhythm, completeness.

Story and religion seem to know this too. There are 7 heavens in various traditions, 7 priests circling Jericho 7 times, Buddha taking 7 steps at birth, Sinbad sailing 7 voyages, and even modern myth gets in line with 7 Harry Potter books. Seven often signals that something is unfolding fully — a journey, a cycle, a testing, a transformation.

Maybe that is the real charm of seven: it feels complete, but not closed. It marks the end of one pattern and the threshold of the next. Seven says the parts belong together. Seven says there is an order beneath the surface. Seven says life may be more exquisitely assembled than it first appears.

Enjoy these meditations on the theme “Interlude” as we begin Week 7.

And what follows? 7 more weeks.

Enjoy!
