One’s and Zero’s

We arrive at Week 10.

The number 10 has an elegance to it. It is made of something very simple: a 1 and a 0. A dash and a dot. Something and space. Presence and openness. Form and the field in which form appears. It’s remarkable that so much can arise from so little. In the digital world, everything we see—images, sound, language, entire worlds—is built from just two signals: 1 and 0. From this simple pairing, complexity unfolds, patterns emerge, and meaning takes shape. In a way, our experience is not so different.

Over the past weeks, we’ve been refining our ability to notice the building blocks of experience—the breath arising and passing, sensations appearing and dissolving, thoughts forming and fading. We begin to recognize a kind of rhythm: something and no-thing, 1 and 0. This is the beginning of mindfulness.

As awareness steadies, something begins to shift. We are no longer just noticing what appears and disappears. We begin to sense the continuity beneath it—the space in which it all unfolds, the subtle intelligence that arranges each moment into something coherent, something alive, something luminous.

The 1 and the 0 are no longer experienced as opposites, but as partners. The appearance of a thought and the space that receives it. The breath moving in and the openness into which it is received. A feeling arising and the awareness that allows it. Each depends on the other. Without space, nothing could appear. Without appearance, space would not be known.

Dots and dashes, 1’s and 0’s—they are not just symbols of information—they are symbols of potential. Not because they contain everything explicitly, but because they allow everything to be formed.

Did a light just go on? That’s luminous perception, and it’s this week’s theme!

Enjoy!
